September 6th Program: Exhibiting Roses Made Easy!
Tom Carruth, “King of the Roses” to speak
at the next Sierra Foothills Rose Society!
Tom Carruth has created more All-America roses than any other living hybridizer, logging 11 in 14 years! For over 25 years, he was the hybridizer and Director of Research, Marketing and Licensing for Weeks Roses and was named Curator of the Rose Collection at The Huntington Library in 2012. Some of the favorite roses in our gardens were hybridized by Tom: roses such as “Julia Child,” “Hot Cocoa,” “Fourth of July,” “Ebb Tide,” “Strike It Rich,” “Memorial Day,” “Scentimental,” and “About Face.”
Tom is responsible for The Huntington’s three-acre Rose Garden in San Marino, which showcases more than 1,200 cultivars and some 4,000 individual shrubs. Established in 1908, the historic landscape is among the most beautiful areas of the grounds, frequently cited by visitors as a favorite Huntington attraction.
During his long career, Tom has introduced more than 100 rose hybrids. He has won numerous national and international awards, including the American Horticultural Society’s Luther Burbank Award for outstanding plan breeding.
